One of the big life lessons I’ve learned recently is that couches should be treated as an investment. It’s never worth it to buy a sofa made of cheap materials or get it “just because it was on sale”. It won’t look good for long. It needs to be comfortable for sure….but it also needs to be well constructed and crafted with QUALITY. After all, it’s something you may {potentially} have for the rest of your life.
Which brings me to my next point: My grandma’s couch that I’m inheriting.
This couch is easily 50 years old and has been sitting in the same spot since I arrived on this planet. It’s in every family photo, birthday present opening, and holiday. When I was little, I never really liked it because I thought the fabric felt itchy. Flash forward 30 years later, and although I’m still very sad we lost my Grandma in May, I’m very happy that I get to hold on to something of hers.
I cannot find a tag or label anywhere on this piece. Does anyone have any idea what style/brand it might be?! Similar styles seem to come up when I search on “Dunbar”. Furniture experts, help!
This sofa does need a little TLC {the underside has a hole in it} but new couches in this shape and size can easily can run in the THOUSANDS of dollars. My plan is to hire a professional to make repairs and reupholster it….which still might cost a bit, but nothing compared to buying it new. For example:
Eek, expensive right?! Let’s hope I can get this baby refurbished for less than that. I loved this post by Emily Henderson about reupholstering vintage pieces and it already has my mind spinning on possible colors and fabric choices. If this were your couch, would you stay true to its original color/fabric or change it?! Suggestions welcome!
