As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we are moving into my Grandma’s old home for the next few years. After getting a thorough inspection done to the property, I’m happy to report the house will be getting quite the overhaul before we occupy it.
There are a couple of big structural/safety issues getting fixed {sagging beams, water damage, rusted and leaking plumbing, popcorn ceiling removal, windows that don’t close, furnace/water heater re-installation} and also a couple of aesthetic things just because stuff is OLD and worn out {new carpet, millwork/doors, bath vanities, and paint}. There is also a laundry list of things to “do later” {including the kitchen}.
Just so you can truly appreciate the “after” when it finally happens, let’s start at the beginning with few snapshots of what the house looked like in its original state.
First? The stats.
- Built in 1971
- 1900 square foot rambler with 4 bedrooms and 1.75 bathrooms
- .20 acres on a quiet cul-de-sac
The pictures above give you a good idea of 3 of the bedrooms and main hall bathroom.
Even though the cupboards and counters are staying for now, the wallpaper is coming off and there will be fresh paint! The lighting fixture is also being changed.
I have so many ideas for the fireplace and the walls on either side of it. I think I’ll save that for a separate post because I’d love your input!
A few years after moving into the house, my grandparents but an addition on the backside of the house. It’s basically a huge open family room with 3 giant bay windows and a sliding glass door that goes out to the deck.
In the picture below, you can kind of get an idea for the flow of the back part of the house. The kitchen leads into a small sitting area with the fireplace, which then opens up to the large family room.
Pretty awesome huh? I can’t wait to show you our progress!

Wow, it's got great bones! That is going to be so much fun to fix up! Andy & I were watching some DIY home shows on HGTV last night and we decided with our next house we totally wanna buy a fixer upper and make it our own. Even though it seems stressful, it would be so rewarding! Can't wait to watch your progress with your Gram's house! :)

I bet Great Grandma Grace is smiling in Heaven as she watches the re-do. I bet she is tickled that her home will soon be yours.
